I’m not sure why this happened, but here is a video of Joanna Newsom and Robin Pecknold from Fleet Foxes performing a straight-faced cover of Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow’s country hit “Picture” at the Fox Theater in Oakland last night. It’s nice!

I was at this show. And, like a fucking dumbass, I left before this happened. Why did I leave, you ask? Because I wanted to get home with enough time to watch The Real Housewives of New Jersey before bed. Seriously.

Joanna Newsom started her set around 9:30, so I was optimistic that she’d wrap up around 10:45. At 10:50, she announced that she was about to begin her final (pre-encore) song. I checked my Bay Area transit app and saw that BART was coming in 10 minutes, and then 35 minutes after that. If I stayed, I wouldn’t have gotten home until closer to 12:30 or maybe even 1 (I have no idea how long her encore went on, especially since her songs average roughly 37 minutes in length). So, visions of Kim G. scowling in my head, I turned to Jeff (who was nice enough to give me his second ticket) and said I was heading home.

I actually thought to myself, “Hmm, I wonder if she’ll play any amazing covers after I leave?” But the rest of the show was so structured and arranged, more like a recital than a concert, that I figured hoping for a cover would be like requesting “Bad Romance” at the symphony. And, sure enough, she played the awesome cover above—joined, no less, by the heavenly Fleet Foxes singer Robin Pecknold, who opened for her. At least there’s video. And I did get to watch Housewives.
